[기쁨과 소망]  단절도 타협도 아닌 선한 싸움을!

예수 믿는 사람은 자신의 정체성에 대해 깊은 관심을 가집니다. 내가 하나님 앞에서 누구인지, 하나님은 나를 누구라 부르시는지, 믿지 않는 사람들은 나를 어떻게 보는지 등, 자신의 정체성에 대해 늘 생각하며 살아갑니다. 이렇게 정체성에 민감한 이유는 예수의 제자로 살아가기가 만만치 않기 때문입니다. 이 세상에서 제자의 길을 가려 할 때 우리의 노력을 방해하는 세력이 너무도 많습니다. 주님의 말씀에 순종하며 살고 싶은데, 그렇게 살지 못하도록 막는 힘이 너무 강합니다. 우리는 반드시 진리를 고수해야만 합니다.  

레위기 18장에 보면 하나님은 이스라엘 백성에게 단단히 주의를 주십니다. 가나안 땅에 들어가기 전에 그들이 반드시 마음에 새겨야 할 말씀을 주신 것입니다. 

너희는 너희가 거주하던 애굽 땅의 풍속을 따르지 말며 내가 너희를 인도할 가나안 땅의 풍속과 규례도 행하지 말고 너희는 내 법도를 따르며 내 규례를 지켜 그대로 행하라 나는 너희의 하나님 여호와이니라 (레 18:3-4).

애굽 땅의 풍속을 따르지 말고 가나안 땅의 풍속도 행하지 말라고 하셨습니다. 특히 이스라엘 민족이 들어가 살게 될 가나안 땅의 풍속은 매우 어지러웠습니다. 레위기 18장을 천천히 읽어보면 얼마나 잘못된 성문화가 만연했는지를 알 수 있습니다. 하나님은 조목조목 다 열거하시면서 이스라엘 민족이 따라가서는 안 될 것을 분명히 하셨습니다. 
여기에 우리에게 주시는 메시지가 있습니다. 예수 믿기 전에 가졌던 그릇된 풍속을 다시는 따라가지 말아야 하며, 예수를 믿고 난 후에 다가올 무서운 유혹이 있으니, 모두 다 물리쳐야 한다는 말씀입니다. 예수 믿는 것은 결코 쉽지 않습니다. 어떠한 유혹이나 타협도 거부하고 하나님의 말씀, 즉 불변하는 진리를 고수해야 합니다. 그렇다고 세상과 타협하지 않겠노라며 세상과의 결별을 선언하며 도피해서는 안 됩니다. 세상과 단절하고 수도원으로 들어가 남은 생을 마치기보다는 어두운 세상에서 빛이 되며, 부패하고 타락한 사람들 사이에서 정직과 순결을 유지하는 것입니다. 
예수를 믿고 따르는 올바른 제자의 삶을 살기 위해서 매일매일 성령의 인도하심과 도우심을 구해야 합니다. 이러한 기도가 절대적으로 필요합니다. 세상이 험합니다. 말씀 안에서 지혜를 달라고, 기도 속에서 능력을 달라고 주님께 구하시기를 바랍니다. 선한 싸움을 싸우고 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지키는 우리 모두가 되어야 하겠습니다!

 

No retreat, no compromise, but a good fight!

We who believe in Jesus are deeply concerned about our identity. Each one of us constantly thinks about who we are before God, how God sees us, and how non-believers view us. We have to be sensitive about our identity because it is not easy to follow Jesus in a secular world. So many forces work against us when we try to follow Jesus. Sometimes, we feel weak and lonely to identify ourselves as followers of Jesus Christ.
 
But Jesus stressed that we must deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him daily. God told the Israelites the same thing: when they get to the land full of milk and honey, be sure not to follow the world's ways. 

"You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices. You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the Lord your God" (Lev. 18:3-4).

God made it clear to the Israelites that they should not follow the ways of Egypt or Canaan. Life before was full of idols. Life ahead was going to be full of idols, also. When we read Leviticus 18, we come across the gravity of the sins in Canaan (primarily sexual deviations). God detailed each one of them and made it clear: the Israelites were NOT to follow the evil practices of the land of Canaan.
 
There is a strong message from Leviticus 18: We'd better be ready for the cultural onslaught. Temptations and compromises are real, but God's people must stand firm and fight them off. Isolation and separation are NOT the answer. Instead, God's people must engage with the fallen culture and be the light where there is darkness. God calls us to shine before the perishing world. Yes, keeping honesty, integrity, and purity always before us, we must walk the talk before the watching world. In the words of the apostle Paul, we must "fight the good fight, finish the race, and keep the faith." May the Lord bless all of us as we take a stance in the world.
